creeping one at the waterside

(vgl. 99.09)

the female shape moves slowly by bending its extremities. in the process, a body part which has grown into a shovel, tears out fresh earth, which is then laid upon the pseudoroots and absorbs nutrients. this way, a constant supply of humidity and fertile earth is provided. the powerful bending motions of the branch extremities are achieved through the manipulation of pressure in the swelling cells. in order to resist great pressure, their flexible cell walls are strongly reinforced. a deflection is achieved by pumping the swelling cells, which are located under the epidermal surface of the upper arm, full of cytoplasm and at the same time drawing cytoplasm from the inflationary cells at the opposing side, so that these shrink. before the extremities pull the heavy shovel-stomach forward, their tips drill themselves several centimeters into the ground.
