der durch­stos­se­ne kör­per von morum gigan­te­um mul­t­ira­dia­tum bil­det füh­ler aus, die zu säcken ange­schwol­len sind. der orga­nis­mus wird häu­fig auch als farb­ku­geln­tra­gend (glo­bo­sco­la­ra­to­s­fe­rens) bezeich­net. er son­dert eine kräf­tig rote basi­sche sub­stanz (ph-wert 13) ab, die sich in den säcken sam­melt und bei bedarf auf­grund einer gewe­be­span­nung von über 150 atmo­sphä­ren explo­si­ons­ar­tig ver­spritzt wird. dabei wird die umge­bung im umkreis von 50 m um den stand­ort her­um von der alka­li­schen lösung kräf­tig ver­ätzt. die drü­sen sit­zen im inne­ren des orga­nis­mus. auch ohne rei­zung durch ande­re orga­nis­men explo­die­ren ein­zel­ne säcke in einem rhyth­mus von meh­re­ren stun­den und schies­sen das leuch­tend rote sekret her­aus. dem orga­nis­mus fehlt die fähig­keit zur kon­stant­hal­tung der kör­per­tem­pe­ra­tur (poi­ki­lo­therm).
