the exhibition deals with the blurring of boundaries between nature and art – the natural and the artificial – as a basic theme in the history of art and gardens. At the end of this process are the now common practices of artificially creating natural things and making artificial things seem natural. matysik develops an elaborate and thematically complex site-specific installation: soil rises up from under the broken granite floor of the exhibition hall to take over the showroom, which matysik turns into a mountain garden. plants from the bern botanical gardens can be found inside, mixed with prototypes of future plant life forms. using a plant guide, visitors can attempt to identity all of the organisms. a documentary-style video runs in parallel, showing plant sociologist prof. dr. klaus amman give a tour through his garden and explicitly refer to the potential of future organisms, some of which have also crept into the garden. in accordance with the theme of the exhibition, matysik’s overall staging manages to blur any definitive characterizations of what is artificial and what is natural.
