rei­ner maria maty­sik ver­wan­delt im som­mer die emscher in wol­ken. mit hil­fe einer maschi­ne wird das was­ser der emscher im bereich der emscher­mün­dung in dins­la­ken, einer abwas­ser­frei­en stre­cke der emscher, in wol­ken­bil­den­den dampf umge­wan­delt. die hier­für benö­tig­te ener­gie wird rege­ne­ra­tiv aus dem fluss selbst gewon­nen. die emscher endet so nicht ein­fach, indem sie im rhein auf­geht, son­dern ein teil von ihr steigt als wol­ke in den him­mel hinauf.
dies ruft über­na­tür­li­che kon­no­ta­tio­nen her­vor und befragt den fluss zugleich nach sei­nem poten­zi­al. auch die maß­nah­men des emscher-umbaus wer­den so beleuch­tet: inwie­weit ist eine rena­tu­rie­rung bzw. ein natur­na­her umbau mög­lich? wel­che natur ist über­haupt gemeint, zu der hin gebaut wer­den soll? ist es über­haupt mög­lich ist in rich­tung natur zu bauen?
neben der wol­ken­ma­schi­ne instal­liert rei­ner maria maty­sik auch eine begeh­ba­re, kugel­för­mi­ge sta­ti­on, die ver­schie­de­ne arbei­ten zum the­ma wol­ken zei­gen wird. die­se sei­fen­bla­sen­ähn­li­che skulp­tur kann wäh­rend der öff­nungs­zei­ten der aus­stel­lung besucht wer­den und bie­tet für bis zu zwei gäs­te eine schlaf­ge­le­gen­heit für eine nacht.

rei­ner maria maty­sik trans­forms the emscher river into clouds over the coming sum­mer. he uses a machi­ne to trans­form the water of the emscher river in the area of the emscher tri­bu­t­a­ry into cloud-forming steam. the power nee­ded for the pro­cess is rege­ne­ra­tively deri­ved from the river its­elf. the emscher river the­r­e­fo­re does not sim­ply cea­se to exist whe­re it flows into the migh­ty rhi­ne river – some part of it is trans­por­ted into the sky as clouds.
the imagery has some­what super­na­tu­ral con­no­ta­ti­ons and rai­ses ques­ti­ons about the river’s poten­ti­al. the pro­ject fur­ther­mo­re high­lights the mea­su­res taken as part of the emscher con­ver­si­on pro­ject. to what ext­ent is rena­tu­ra­ti­on or con­ver­si­on back to natu­re real­ly pos­si­ble? what is the natu­re at which the con­ver­si­on is aimed? is it real­ly pos­si­ble to build nature?
in addi­ti­on to the ‘cloud machi­ne’, rei­ner maria maty­sik installs an acces­si­ble, sphe­ri­cal sta­ti­on, whe­re num­e­rous works on the topic ‘clouds’ are dis­play­ed. this sculp­tu­re, remi­nis­cent of a soap bubble, is open to visi­tors during the ope­ning times of the exhi­bi­ti­on, and offers over­night accom­mo­da­ti­on for up to two visi­tors per night.
