leptophis confluens is a compact elongated, thin, worm-like tongue-organism. the tongue serves for orientation and movement as well as for defense. the torso shows distinctive vertical furrows at the side. the head’s shape gives the organism an eel-like appearance. the tail is rounded at the base, with protruding warts. it is shorter than the torso and the head combined. the individuals of leptophis confluens live in social collectives of 5 to 12 organisms. all individuals of a group are males. only after an extended period of time does the gender of the highest ranking individual change. the one that has turned into a female mates with the second strongest. if the female dies, the former mate develops into the only female.
